Ben Spalding sold its bicycle division to the American Bicycle Company, a large trust.
By 1900, Spalding had begun offering boxing bags, dumbbells, and Indian clubs for sale. Spalding sold a wide range of sports-related things throughout 1916, including clothes, barbells, golf clubs, fencing blades and foils, guy robes, pulleys and weights, measuring tapes, rowing machines, track equipment, and whistles.
During WWII, the company formed the New England Small Arms Corporation with five other companies to manufacture M1918 Browning Automatic Rifles. He also made components for the “toothpick” capacitors used with the VT proximity fuse as a subcontractor to Sprague Electric Company.
Through the 1976 season, Spalding manufactured the official game pucks for the National Hockey League, the “Spaldeen” high-bounce rubber ball, and the official ball of the Major Leagues. The official ball has been made by Rawlings since 1977.
Spalding designed the “Message” series of aftermarket vehicle wheels in collaboration with the Toyo Rubber Company of Japan beginning in 1981. One of these wheels, the Message II, was characterized by the firm as resembling a “steam locomotive piston” and earned awards from magazines such as Motorfan Magazine for best spoke-type wheel and reader’s overall choice. It is known that Spalding wheels were produced until at least 1986.
Spalding was acquired by the Russell Corporation in 2003, except for its golf operations which included the Top-Flite, Ben Hogan, and Strata brands, which were then purchased by the Callaway Golf Company later that year.
